What Are the Jaw Crusher Components?

Core Jaw Crusher Components

  • Frame: the skeleton of the equipment, which is subjected to huge crushing force, commonly used high-strength steel plate welding or cast steel parts.
  • Movable Jaw: the core moving part, equipped with removable movable jaw plate (tooth plate), driven by the eccentric shaft to do complex elliptical trajectory movement.
  • Fixed Jaw: fixed in the front of the frame, equipped with removable fixed jaw plate (tooth plate), and the movable jaw plate together constitute the crushing chamber.
  • Jaw Plate: The wear-resistant parts that directly contact with the material to be crushed, the shape and tooth shape affect the crushing efficiency and product size, the material is mostly high manganese steel or other wear-resistant alloys.
  • Eccentric shaft: the main power transmission shaft, driving the moving jaw movement through the eccentric structure.
  • Connecting rod: In some structures (e.g. simple pendulum), it connects the eccentric shaft and the movable jaw (or thrust plate), transferring motion and force.
  • Elbow plate (thrust plate): a key safety and adjustment component. The rear elbow plate supports the movable jaw and provides the pivot point for the compound pendulum; the front elbow plate (used for support in some designs) also often doubles as a safety fuse (breaks to protect the main body in case of overload). More critically, varying the number of different thicknesses of rear elbow plate shims is the primary way to adjust the size of the discharge opening.
  • Flywheel: Installed at both ends of the main shaft, it uses inertia to store and release kinetic energy, ensuring smooth operation and assisting in overcoming the peak load at the moment of crushing.
  • Lubrication system: provide reliable oil lubrication (splash, spray or centralised lubrication) for key friction parts such as main shaft bearings and elbow plate seats.

Working Principle of Jaw Crusher

The working principle of jaw crusher is based on mechanical extrusion crushing, the core of which is the cyclic relative movement of the movable jaw and the fixed jaw, which clamps the material between the two jaw plates and repeatedly applies pressure until it is crushed. It is mainly divided into the following 4 stages:

1. Feeding stage:

The material falls into the crushing chamber (the space formed by the fixed jaw plate and the movable jaw plate) from the inlet at the top with an inclination of 55°. The movable jaw is driven by the eccentric shaft towards the fixed jaw so that the material is held between the two jaws.

2. Extrusion stage:

The motor drives the eccentric shaft to rotate at a high speed (usually 200-300 rpm) through the belt pulley, and the eccentric part of the eccentric shaft pushes the movable jaw to produce reciprocating motion. When the movable jaw is close to the fixed jaw plate, the angle between the two jaw plates exerts a huge composite force of extrusion, splitting and bending on the material.

3. Crushing stage:

When the local pressure > compressive strength of the material when the material is broken. The large pieces of material that do not meet the standard fall back to the bottom of the cavity to be extruded twice.

4. Discharge stage:

When the movable jaw is far away from the fixed jaw plate, the discharge opening at the lower end of the crushing chamber opens. The material which has been crushed to a size smaller than the discharge opening will naturally fall down under the force of gravity and be discharged from the bottom.
